We recently had the opportunity to experience true Parisian dining right here in Taipei, at one of the chicest restaurants in the city, S Restaurant & Bar at the elegant S Hotel, located on Dunhua Road. This sophisticated and modern hotel was designed by world-renowned architect Philippe Starck, and offers upscale accommodation (we’ll tell you more about that later on!), a restaurant serving international cuisines prepared by a Michelin star trained chef, a cigar lounge fit for KINGS, and a fashionable bar offering some of the best cocktails in town (What’s not to love about this place?!)
We were welcomed by the general manager, Yves Godard, with a glass of champagne and taken to our table at the back of this vibrant restaurant, decorated with colorful carpets, leather and wood furniture and modern art. The dim lighting together with faux fireplaces create a warm and romantic ambiance (perfect for date night!), and the French interior elements truly takes you on a journey to the City of Love.
Chef David Rathgeber, who runs the famous French bistro L’Assiette in Paris, made a guest appearance at S Restaurant & Bar and brought us his gastronomical French cooking delights, presenting us with not one, but SIX unique courses prepared by the famous chef himself. We had a feast… (to say the least!)
Our culinary adventure started with Confit Pork Shank Rillettes and Foie gras. The aromatic, tender pork shank “rilletes” creamed together with rich, buttery and delicate Foie gras was fantastic and had our taste buds doing a French Menuet!
Next up was the Blue Shrimp and Veal Tartare that melted in our mouths, complemented by the unworldly sesame ice cream and wasabi mayo that knocked our taste buds completely out.
The next dish, Cuttlefish carbonara and Smoked Eel, can only be described as a “cheesy” love affair that made us fall head over heels in love. Need we say more?
The Octopus, Pork belly and Clams in Aged Sherry Vinegar was an explosion of flavors and we couldn’t resist completely clearing our plates. The flavors combined like a perfect French symphony at the opera!
Our next course was rich, meaty and melt-in-your-mouth delicious, the Red Wine Braised Beef Cheek Polenta. The mouthwatering braised Beef Cheeks screamed out red wine and was complemented by the creamy and soft parmasan infused polenta. Yum!
We ended our fine dining adventure with our "Dish of the day", the Caramel Cream with Salty Butter. The beauty of this dish revealed itself when touching our tongues, and our souls literally left our bodies and joined the “Food Gods”! (Haha, we're not even kidding!) This is the best dessert we've ever had, and it was the perfect ending to Chef Rathgeber's six course food adventure.
Cheff Rathgeber truly took our taste buds on a journey through classic French cuisines infused with beautiful and mouth watering Asian flavors. If you missed out on this amazing culinary food-venture and you're planning a trip to Paris in the future, make sure you stop by L'Assiette and experience Chef Rathgeber's French cookery in his bistro in Montparnasse (Order the Caramel Cream dessert, and thank us later!)
