Our Eyebrows Microblading Experience | Taipei Beauty

January 9, 2018

I’m just going to jump right into things and start off with these before and after photos of our microblading experience. That’s what you’re here for, right?

Now, let’s back up for a second and let me just answer some of the most commonly asked questions we get, and that I know you might have at this point as well.

What is microblading? Microblading is a form of semi-permanent tattoo that involves using tiny needles that make up a small blade to help deposit pigment under your skin.

Who can do microblading? Microblading should only be done by a certified microblading artist.

How long does it last? Microblading lasts for up to three years, but touch-ups are required every 6 months to a year and a half, depending on your skin type, and the skincare products you use on your face.

Our experience:

Tieneke and I had both been obsessed with getting microblading done since we first learned about this procedure back in 2016. I’ve always had very sparse and shapeless brows and basically never left the house without coloring and shaping them a little first. (So time-consuming, but I just didn’t feel confident going au naturel.)

We had basically given up on our dream of having perfect brows, because we were too nervous getting it done here in Taipei, fearing that the result would be too dark for us blondies. But, an ad for BeautySlesh's page popped into my Facebook newsfeed one day, and Christine appeared into our lives like an angel from heaven.

Christine is originally from Ukraine and have been living in Taiwan for over 7 years. She has been a certified microblading artist for 2 years, and have performed microblading on countless happy customers.  (We know this because we stalked her social media accounts for before/after pics!) From the beginning, Christine answered all of our questions thoroughly, and understood our concern for the result being too dark. As she’s a blondie herself, we knew she’d understand.

Christine told us that she offers 3 options for eyebrow microblading:

Microblading, which is done manually. It looks like real hair strokes and is suitable for those who want a more natural look.

Shading, which is done with a tool and looks like eye shadow shade on your brows, or as if you were drawing them on with a brow pencil. This is suitable for those who like the “makeup look”.

Microblading and shading, which is a combination of both that looks the most natural and realistic. This is especially a good option if you have sparse eyebrows. The result is a natural look, rather than a makeup look. Tieneke and I both decided on the microblading and shading combination option. We both wanted a little more shape to our brows, and natural hair strokes and color shading.

After messaging back and forth with Christine, her answering our hundreds of questions, us sending her pics of our eyebrows without makeup, and her giving us advice and peace of mind, we set up our appointments.

The First Appointment

  • First we sat down with Christine for a consultation, where we discussed what shapes and shades we preferred.

  • Then, she took some “before” pics.

  • After that, she drew on the initial shape and had us look in the mirror to tell her how she should customize it.

  • When we were happy with the shape, she copied it to the other eyebrow and had us confirm that we were happy with the overall look.

  • Next she applied a topical numbing cream, which takes about 25 minutes to numb the eyebrow area.

  • While we waited, we discussed the shade that we wanted, and Christine mixed the ink and tested it on our skin to confirm it was the color that we wanted.

  • The next step is the microblading and shading procedures. It’s not really painful, but kind of feels like someone is plucking your eyebrows very quickly, and it makes a scraping sound.

  • Throughout the process, Christine would hand us a mirror so that we can see the progress and make sure we are happy with the results.

  • When she finished, she took “after” pics.

  • Before we went home, she gave us some advice for the aftercare and healing period.

  • We also set up the dates for the suggested touch-up appointments, which was to be a month later.

  • The first appointment took about 2.5 hours for each of us.

The First Healing Period

DAY 1 – 3:

  • Our brows were very dark for the first week or so after the first appointment, but Christine kept reminding us that the color would fade a little eventually. (Still kind of scary though!)

  • Our eyebrow areas were sensitive and a little red and swollen.

  • We were told to keep the eyebrow area dry for a few days.

  • We were told to also sleep on our backs so that our eyebrows wouldn’t rub off on the pillow.

  • We were advised to put Vaseline on our eyebrows for the first few days to protect it from germs etc.

  • We also read that we could put coconut oil on our brows to keep it hydrated.

DAY 5 – 10:

  • Our eyebrows started itching and scabbing.

  • We were advised not to scratch the area or pull off scabs.

  • Our eyebrows were patchy and uneven (and kind of crazy looking.)

DAY 11 – 21:

  • The color began to fade and look more natural.

  • Our brows were still patchy and the color became much lighter.

DAY 21 – 30:

  • Some parts of our brows were “missing” and very patchy.

  • We were both looking forward to our touch-up appointment to fill in the missing parts.

The Touch-Up Appointment

  • We had a consultation with Christine again where we discussed any changes we wanted to the shape, where we wanted corrections made, and which parts we wanted intensified.

  • Next, she applied the numbing cream again and we waited 25 minutes for it to take effect.

  • The microblading and shading part was repeated exactly as at the first appointment, but took less time.

  • It was definitely a bit more painful this time. (Maybe because the area was still a little sensitive?)

  • After confirming that we were happy with the final results, Christine took some “after” pics again.

  • The touch up appointment lasted about 1.5 hours for each of us.

The Second Healing Period

Day 30 – 50:

We went through exactly the same experience as the first healing period, but this time our eyebrows weren’t patchy or have parts “missing”.

Things to know before making an appointment:

  • This is a process that takes about 1.5 months.

  • Take the healing timeline into consideration for important events.

  • Do a lot of research to find the best microblading artist in your area. (Someone with lots of customers and before/after pics.)

  • Search for, and save, photos of brow shapes and shades you like (and what you don’t like!)

  • Understand that everyone's skin is different, and that the pigment might not "take" on certain parts of your eyebrows after the first appointment.
